The History of St. Francis Country House

Situated on a lovely five acre campus in Southeastern Delaware County St. Francis Country House (SFCH) is a 273 bed skilled care nursing home. Founded by the Sisters of Bon Secours in 1913, the property on which SFCH is situated was once owed by John Bartram, the colonial-American botanist, and was surrounded by luxuriant shade trees. Since 1913, SFCH has had a tradition of excellence in quality, compassionate care. First established as a fifteen bed home “in the country” to provide free care for new mothers, convalescing after childbirth, the evolution of SFCH has included the construction of a “new” main building in 1948, later expanded in 1954. The addition of the John and Mary McShain Pavilion in 1978 brought the total bed compliment to 273. SFCH has a vibrant Women’s Auxiliary that was chartered in 1948 and today continues to support various renovations and facility improvements.
